About Milicz Ponds Nature Reserve

The Milicz Ponds Nature Reserve, situated in Lower Silesia, Poland, is one of the oldest and largest fish pond complexes in Europe, with origins dating back to the 12th century. Covering an extensive network of over 285 lakes and ponds interconnected by canals, dikes, and streams, the reserve lies primarily along the Barycz River valley. This wetland ecosystem supports a rich array of flora and fauna, particularly acting as a vital breeding and stopover site for numerous bird species including the white-tailed eagle, bittern, and cranes. The reserve is part of the larger Barycz Valley Landscape Park, totaling nearly 20,000 hectares of protected habitats that support amphibians, fish, and rare plant species. Historically, the ponds were created and maintained for carp aquaculture, a tradition preserved to this day with sustainable water management and conservation efforts. Visitors to Milicz Ponds can enjoy scenic walking and cycling trails that weave among tranquil waters and diverse reed beds, providing excellent opportunities for wildlife photography and birdwatching. Canoeing and kayaking are popular activities, giving access to remote corners of the reserve. The reserve also hosts an environmental education center that offers workshops and guided eco-tours. Milicz Ponds’ combination of cultural heritage, tranquil landscapes, and rich biodiversity make it a compelling destination for nature lovers, photographers, and those seeking peaceful outdoor recreation in a rarely disturbed wetland environment.
